Patrick: I hope that this clip from the C-net article linked below is of some use as to the future and capability of DVD.

The real debate is not just over when, but whether DVD will replace CD. HP, Philips, Sony, and others seem confident that the demand for CD-RW drives will continue, and project that 15 million units will ship in 1999. But that number is small compared to the 123 million DVD drives that market researcher IDC expects will ship in the year 2001. When might DVD dominate the market? Some analysts predict DVD will surpass CD by the year 2000. Yet others think that if DVD doesn't prevail by the end of 1998, consumers will give up on it.

A key to DVD's success or failure is the development of its rewriteable technology, which has a few hurdles to overcome--most notably, the fact that the many different rewriteable DVD formats (e.g. DVD-RAM, DVD+RW, and DVD-R/W) are still incompatible.
