The AOL IM upgrade confused me, too. Since they're both free, and owned by the same company ... what's the point?

Perhaps they're trying to phase ICQ out in favor of Instant Messenger. They won't get a very warm reception from the ICQ users, though. Those folks are pretty strong fans.

I agree with you about any future competition. I'm not sure why any new corporate entityt would want to even try to compete against them. The startup costs would be enormous! Just think of all those servers and hard drives. Geez ...
