The X-factor might turn out to be simply the business cycle. After a time a variety of problems accumulate during every expansion, and the cycle starts down. The demographic trend is going to remain a favorable long term trend, but I don't know that we can count on an uninterrupted bull market until the 'Boomers retire. I suspect the market can tank whether or not small investors stay fully invested, or panic and pull out. It might even be better if small investors did pull out, then there would be more cash on the sidelines at the bottom of the cycle.
