Synapsid,
"Of particular note are the apparent efforts from ATI to penetrate the non-captive, high-volume, low-end graphics card business (in direct competition with S3), which is new market for them".
That's what happens to graphics products when they have a
successful product they can keep it around much longer, drive
down cost, move it to lower end systems as they introduce new
high end products.

Trident is still a major competitor? They haven't had a new desktop chip since their 3DImage985!? and while we are on the subject, has anyone seen any reviews of the this trident chip? or its predecessor the 3DImage975? I can't seem to find any info on its performance, just know that on the box it claims to be faster than the VirgeGX/2.
