John, All,

This discussion highlights a fact that is seldom considered in general discussion. And that is that there are some 1200 independent telcos here in the states that will eventually exchange traffic with the larger IXCs at mid span points, using DWDM at some point, and they will likewise hand off to thousands of ISPs who must also hand off traffic to the IXCs over DWDM, at some point.

DWDM systems are not yet standardized to the point where interoperability exists, i.e., where any manufacture works with any other manufacture, or where differing network management platforms can be used to oversee disparate vendors architectures. So they must be of like manufacture at both ends of the fiber whenever two carriers trunk between themselves.

This would suggest to me that the larger carriers will have the say on whose brand is used more often than not. And there are a lot of implications that can be deduced from this.

It was this way with pre-SONET T-1/T-3 hierarchies, and with SONET itself, and it will be this way with DWDM, as well.

FWIW, Frank C.
