Good comments. I agree that allocating bandwidth, i.e. QOS, will be a driver for ATM. Here is an interesting analysis on the CIEN/TLAB merger: #reply-5574848 It looks like LU was indeed playing some games.

You make a very relevant point. I'd go one step
further and say DWDM is here to stay regardless ATM wins or loses
over other old technologies like Sonet(I speak in the NSP/ISP market). The IP over ATM vs. IP over Sonet in the ISP world is almost in favor of Sonet today.

- Mostly because ATM has 10% overhead (or 20% in ISP traffic)
whereas sonet is 2%. (Save $$$$)
- ATM interfaces at high speeds become exponentially complex to design and implement(cost).
- ATM is a much more complicated protocol(caused its own downfall).
- With tagging protocols and class of service features Voice over
IP could be easily implemented. (Tag it with the cheap ASICs and
distribute these tag info with MPLS etc.)
-ISP's would be charging in some shape or form for service levels ($$$$$$). That's why everybody and their mother wants to be in the voice data convergence. This inturn will demand a lot of bandwidth so more channels in the fibre so DWDM and so Cienna.

Cienna and the likes are therefore a very strategic piece no matterwhat. Of course everything is future and its bright. I am glad I got on it Friday. Wondering if there are plays you guys are doing given today's announcement and the option premium (purely from option/stock play).

Thanks,

Deep
