At first blush it appears that Office 2000 doesn't make use of any "standard" mechanism, such as WebDAV, to post HTML files and other documents from an application such as MS Word to a file/web server. I've seen references to the use of proprietary Front Page server extensions.

Having said all that, its been a little quiet around WebDAV lately and I'm uncertain as to its status or acceptance as a new standard.

When more DM-like features hit operating systems we will see an impact, but the timing of such is very much up in the air. Even if I wasn't in this industry I'd rather see Microsoft focus their attention on more global requirements like Directory Services (and making NT 5 solid).

I also expect that the DM industry will have moved far along the value curve by such time, and past offering basic checkin/checkout functionality.

Something else to consider - Companies like PCDOCS and FileNET drive lots of Microsoft SQL Server revenue as well (DOCSF was number 1 for Microsoft in this regard last year) - I'd think the Redmontonians are cognizant of that too.
