I am told that the recoil from a 50 is "severe" but not "waay severe". The first category includes, say, a 338 Win Mag bolt gun or a 12 gauge pump filled with magnum slug or double-ought. The second category has us in the dangerous game chamberings, like the 458 Win Mag and all those Masochistic Pachyderm Assassin rounds from England. (The ones whimsically called nitro Express.)
The recoil on a 50 is much softened by an efficient muzzle brake. This can absorb 60-70% (!) of felt recoil. The price is truly brain-melting muzzle blast. Rings your bell right through good earmuffs. Furthermore, Coyote Gal in the story did an injury to the hood and windshield of her [friend's!] pickup. The sideblast from 240 grains of powder exhaust going 4700 feet per second can cut like an acetylene torch, almost.
