It could be the speed of your computer. If you are running a 66MHz machine, it can't keep up. Remember, the processor has to process the data for display. With a 56.6K modem the difference between a 66MHz and 233Mhz machine is like day and night..

Cable is a shared resource. That means you get speed degradation with each user that is simultaneously using it. Try the same ping test later tonight and see what happens.

For me, the difference in general is night and day. I notice it most when I'm downloading a large file. For example, if I'm browsing Edgar and I see a 10K that's 300K I can view it in literally a couple of seconds. Graphics flash on the screen, Real Audio files come on in a split second, etc.

I doubt your computer has much to do with things as if you can handle a CD Rom game you can certainly handle pictures and text from the internet. The only thing that I've seen that helps is clearing your cache as if it's full then you have to delete files to make room for new stuff and that disk thrashing can slow you down bigtime.
