Mark (from Bob),

I realize that it may sound odd that some parts of Scipture are taken literally and some not. But as we've discussed that is the way things are. The most important truths of Scripture are repeated from cover to cover and represented both literally and figuratively. That being the case, we can decipher the figurative with the literal verses on a given topic. This technique is referred to as Scripture interpreting Scripture. It works!! If a translation of a figurative verse does not fit into the context of the entire Biblical message then the figurative interpretation must be changed to conform, otherwise we will have a concept in one passage that does not dwell in harmony with 100 verses on the same topic. Surely this would be a large problem.

I believe the Bible because of several reasons:

1. The prophecies are extremely specific and their fulfillments have been just as specific.

2. Archealogical evidences have substantiated the Bible.

3. Scientific discoveries substantiate the Bible. From physics to astronomy.

4. Personal experience. Whenever I want to know more about myself all I need to do is open the Bible. I'm still amazed at how the Bible can illuminate my inner being clearly enough so that I can see myself as I never did before. That type of illumination leads to wonderful changes. Sometimes revolutionary changes.

Based on these beliefs, I have a perfect foundation to approach life ... the Bible. It knows me and others better than we know ourselves and that helps me to improve and be what God wants me to be as well as preparing me to deal with others (you know how difficult that can be :-) ).

I realize that somebody looking at me interpreting literally or figuratively depending on the verse would think that I can create my own beliefs outside of the intent of Scripture. That's true, we see it done all of the time. AS a matter of fact when satan tempted Christ he used Scripture taken out of context. But when Scripture is balanced against Scripture you can only come up with one answer.
