LSI Logic Announces Highly Integrated Enclosure Services Processor; Single-Chip Processor Integrates Industry-Standard Protocols to Support Customization

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 1998--LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE:LSI) is now shipping a new flexible, single-chip Enclosure Services Processor.

The SYM53C040 is a highly integrated processor that implements SCSI Accessed Fault-Tolerant Enclosure (SAF-TE) and SCSI-3 Enclosure Services (SES) protocols in either parallel SCSI or serial Fibre Channel environments. The Enclosure Services Processor reduces cost and speeds time to market by replacing the current multi-chip configuration, and provides manufacturers with two options for support. These choices are either the widely used parallel SCSI interface or the serial Fibre Channel environment that is increasingly chosen for high speed storage area network (SAN) access.

SAF-TE and SES are industry-standard protocols used to evaluate and detect a number of different environmental conditions including the presence of drives in an enclosure, to help condition a slot to insert or remove a drive, to manage fan control or to measure usage status.

The Enclosure Services Processor has a configuration utility that enables manufacturers to customize the firmware for their specific enclosures. This single-chip solution provides the made-to-order flexibility the marketplace has wanted for quite some time.

The SYM53C040 also supports the SFF-8067 interface for Fibre Channel enclosures. In addition, it has two multi-master, two-wire serial interfaces for chip configuration, firmware downloading, and access to external two-wire peripherals (e.g., digital thermometers and other 2-wire serial devices such as the LM75, LM78 and DS1621.) The SYM53C040 processor has 54 programmable I/O pins for environmental monitoring: 28 Multi-Purpose I/O Pins for enclosure sensory inputs, and 24 Multi-Purpose LED Pins with programmable blink rates for displaying status events. The SYM53C040 has a configuration utility that enables you to customize the firmware for your specific enclosures. I/O pins are completely programmable and can be configured individually.

The processor is designed to work with SCSI bus expanders such as the LSI Logic SYM53C141 and SYM53C120. It has integrated LVDlink(tm) transceivers for direct attachment to either Low Voltage Differential or Single-Ended SCSI busses. LVDlink is a balanced driver design that is compliant with the industry standard SCSI Parallel Interface-2 (SPI-2) document.

The SYM53C040 is available packaged in a 160-pin plastic quad flat pack (PQFP) or 169 plastic ball grid array (PBGA) and costs $37.50 per PQFP piece. An evaluation/development kit is also available for $800.00 each.
