The study cites telecommunications industry deregulation, optoelectronics advances and the introduction of new data transfer services as contributing factors. New optical fibre production methodologies such as wavelength-division multiplexing, time-division multiplexing, erbium-doped fibre amplifiers and non-zero dispersion-shifted fibre is pushing the technology toward the ultimate goal of the communications industry, mass market fibre-to-the-home connectivity. -0-
