Overwhelming Response to Latin American
Forum Demonstrates cdmaOne Technology
Most Beneficial for Region

Latin America Recognized as a Key Growth Area for the
World's Fastest to Market Wireless Technology

COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 1998-- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) today
announced the conclusion of its successful Latin American Forum held last week in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The event was attended by more than 300 delegates, primarily from Latin America, who heard leading
wireless executives' perspectives on the global acceptance of cdmaOne technology.

''The high level of attendance at the CDMA Latin American Forum demonstrates the tremendous
opportunity for growth in the Latin American region. In addition, with the formation of the CDG's Latin
American Interest Group, the CDG will bring together representatives from member companies to
apply their collective experience and expertise to the region, further accelerating the technology
throughout Central and South America,'' said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. ''The CDG
was extremely pleased with the amount of interest and support voiced from Latin American wireless
operators, and we look forward to the technology's continued success in Mexico and Brazil, particularly
in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Furthermore, cdmaOne manufacturers are taking an active role with
operators, addressing the inherent benefits of cdmaOne for urban and rural areas -- underscoring that
the technology is a natural fit for Latin America, both for fixed and mobile wireless applications.''

Global wireless executives delivered presentations on a variety of cdmaOne topics including CDMA
systems in rural environments, evolving CDMA data capabilities and the economics of Wireless Local
Loop (WLL). Case studies from Telefonica del Peru and Telecomunicaciones de Guatamala provided
background on operators' experiences with CDMA in Latin America. Other speakers at the Forum
included representatives from several leading cdmaOne operators including Grupo Iusacell and GTE
Wireless, as well as cdmaOne manufacturers including Lucent, Motorola, NEC, Nortel and
QUALCOMM.

''Given the overwhelming success and positive feedback resulting from this year's Forum, the CDG will
host a similar, comprehensive CDMA Latin America-specific event in the summer of 1999,'' noted
LaForge.

The CDMA Development Group (CDG) is a nonprofit trade association formed to foster the worldwide
