<< And yes, as you may have guessed, I am a flag waving veteran--WW2 vintage.>>

First of all, thank you for what you did for the U.S. and the world during WWII.

Second, I agree that we do what we have to, and that sometimes looking back on what we did is not pleasant. WWII included some amazing cooperation by Hollywood, the news media, all Americans, etc. That cooperation was not present for Vietnam or Korea. Instead, the wars become completely political. Either because it was never there in the first place (personally, I believed the domino theory), or because of the politics, we lost the moral high ground in Vietnam, and therefore our will to fight. In WWII, we were absolutely convinced that not fighting would result in the end of freedom, something not at issue by the end of Vietnam. No one believed the Vietnamese were a threat to the U.S., and few believed (by the end of the war) that China would continue to push forward. Even with all the evidence to the contrary today, people believe that way. Instead, we focused on the suffering (on both sides). What I will never understand is the vilification the veterans went through when they returned. I have relatives that fought in Korea, and they refuse to even discuss their experience. I have friends that fought in Vietnam, and they are still bitter.

GOOD FOR YOU! THREE CHEERS FOR THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE!

Thank goodness that my step-father didn't have to run to the beach at Tarawa with the likes of some of these.
