Your assesment is correct. IBM poured all of their effort into APPN to handle these large flows in a mainframe centric world. Thus they only recently have taken to IP (on the Mainframe side).

The Juniper/IBM relationship is as Curtis stated - a simple microelectronics deal.

However, just as we all admire LU for Bell Labs and all the deep research, IBM has its own research arm. They continue to out-patent even LU and could re-appear in the communications wars. They just need to bury the SNA centric marketing and maybe their current Network Hardware Division :-).

Any thought on IBM's view of all this? They have deep pockets both in cash, stock pooling and research.
