Japan's Pioneer Electronic said today that it had joined hands with Canal Plus of France and U.S. firms C-Cube Microsystems and DiviCom to develop an advanced digital cable TV system.

The companies formed the alliance to develop a system that will "provide digital video and interactive television applications, such as an interactive program guide, Web browsing, video-on-demand, network games, home banking, online shopping, and data and digital audio-video capabilities," Pioneer said in a statement.

They will be targeting the North American market, in addition to Europe and Japan, where more cable and digital cable broadcasting is planned.

The system will comply with OpenCable hardware standards to keep the system interoperable, it said. OpenCable is an effort by a consortium of cable companies to allow interoperability and to promote competition among suppliers.
