Sony Introduces Floppy Disk Digital Mavica Cameras with XGA Resolution and MPEG 'Movie Mode'It's likely to be MPEG-1. Pretty cool, though. NEW YORK, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Just as "talkies" changed the world of motion pictures, Sony plans to change the way we communicate on the Internet with today's introduction of Digital Mavica(R) still cameras capable of capturing up to 60 seconds of MPEG video and audio on a standard 3.5-inch floppy disk. The new cameras (models MVC-FD91 and MVC-FD81) incorporate XGA (1024x768) resolution for high quality still photos and image printing with the MPEG feature called MPEG Movie Mode, and a new Voice Memo Mode for adding narration to captured images. The Digital Mavica camera is the nation's top-selling digital still camera due to its ability to store pictures onto standard floppy disks. The MVC-FD91 and MVC-FD81 complement the recently introduced MVC-FD51 and FD71 cameras that were announced this year with faster floppy image capture. "With an ever increasing number of businesses and consumers using e-mail, the Digital Mavica camera's ease-of-use with the floppy disk, MPEG Movie Mode will give users more ways to enhance their Internet communications, " said Jay Sato, vice president of personal video marketing for Sony Electronics. In addition to MPEG Movie Mode, XGA high resolution and Voice Memo Mode, the MVC-FD81 provides quality images with a 3X optical zoom lens, built-in intelligent flash, a 2.5-inch color LCD display with brightness control, auto exposure with six pre-programmed exposure modes, and four pre-programmed special picture effects. The higher-end MVC-FD91 with a 14x Optical Zoom lens -- the longest visual zoom currently available in digital still cameras -- provides flexibility similar to a professional 35mm zoom with a range of 37-518mm and a manual focus ring to allow more accurate, professional pictures. An Auto Macro feature allows images to be captured as close as one-inch from the subject and still retain clarity. Sony has also included Super SteadyShot(R) picture stabilization, a popular feature that uses motion sensors to remove unwanted camera "shake." The MPEG Movie Mode allows users, at a click of the mouse, to share the excitement of a baby's first steps, first words or first birthday with family and friends thousands of miles away -- through motion video and audio sent via e-mail. [Don't get any ideas, FredE!] Digital Mavica MPEG movies are easily accessible through Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.0 or supplied MGI PhotoSuite(R) Software on CD-ROM for image manipulation and archiving. The new Digital Mavica camera's Voice Memo Mode allows convenient narration of digital still images, increasing the versatility in presentations, slide shows and product demonstrations. Presentation Mode, perfect for quick 15-second, 320 x 240 images in a presentation, or Voice Mail Mode, ideal for sending up to 60 seconds of motion video with audio, (160 x 112) via e-mail. Both new models offer such additional features as: Progressive CCD scanning; 2X high speed floppy disk drive; E-mail compression mode; Whole disk copy for copying disks right inside the camera to simply and quickly share images; Automatic shutter speed from 1/60-1/4000 second for capturing fast moving subjects; Built-in "Intelligent Flash" automatically turns on in low-light and adjusts for the optimum amount of flash; Full-motion, 2.5-inch color LCD display viewfinder with a solar window for power optimization; and Preprogrammed exposure modes for the best results under difficult lighting situations. Both models incorporate Sony's popular, rechargeable InfoLithium batteries. By using a microchip inside the battery, Sony's AccuPower(TM) system shows how many minutes of battery life are available. The two new Digital Mavica cameras will be available in late October for $1,099 (MSRP) for the MVC-FD91 and $899 (MSRP) for the MVC-FD81. Sony Electronics Inc.
