I was superv. the inst. of a couple 75 hp. air comp. in Hickory, NC and had just turned them on that morn. had a gen. an let one of the other guys borrow it for use back in the 'country'. 7:00 am and I headed for town. wind was only about 85 to 115 at the time. Down the road I went...
Transformers to the left of me... Boom!!! transformers to the right of me Boom!!! Boom!! Trees breaking and branches, tin, 2x4's, trash - cans and all... Utility buildings flying, more trees and finally - I was back at the house. Opened the door w/ the remote and in I went. Boom went trees, trsnsformers and more junk. No more power for 2-1/2 weeks. All of the neighborhood - excluding that one Stupid ol' boy - started helping others as soon as the storm past.
Our ice was handed out at 6-9 am/pm,12-3am/pm from city iceplants w/ generators - 2 bags per person; and water as it was tankered in... for the first few days. City water back after that.
My fife slept thru hit of initial storm center and wouldn't believe me about Hugo coming to town for a long 1/2 hour. When she finally ventured out she didn't believe the damage.
We thought we were in God's country, too. Wondered how no fewer lives were lost.
