Computer maker Dell will open a manufacturing
and customer center in Alvorada, Brazil, that will
employ more than 250 employees within two years,
the company said today.

Dell did not disclose the size of its investment, but
InvestNews, a financial newswire owned by
Brazil's leading financial newspaper Gazeta
Mercantil, said the company planned to spend
$108.9 million to build the plant, which will
produce 250,000 personal computers annually. A
Dell spokeswoman declined to comment on the
report.

Pending government
approval, Dell said in a
statement that it expects
to manufacture its
desktop computer
systems for customers in
the Mercosul region,
which includes Brazil,
Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Chile, beginning
next year.

Dell will also market a complete line of desktop,
notebook, workstation, and server systems, and
offer service and technical support to the Brazilian
market through its direct-sale model.

The Alvorada plant will be Dell's eighth worldwide.
