good morning..after much thought about possible source of deflation in US I came up with something..
Our economy is probably at least 80 percent service based..the deflated commodity prices and cheap imports have probably just helped our corporations margins by lowering their costs..but prices are not reflected in a lot of the corporations merchandise..ie Nike,yes..pcs's etc
a lot of home owners have benefitted from lower mortgage rates..they are a lot better off than at the peak of real estate bubble in '87 when their mortgages in many cases were higher than the value of their property and their mortgage costs were astronomical..so in a sense the importation of low interest rates thanks to Japan etc has brought some nice deflation here..has benefited(sp) a lot of citizens here..(at the same they have definitely hurt people living on fixed income or on pensions and ss indexed to "inflation" and has reduced their spending
power) and prudent investors who wanted no part of the stock market..
(this is stream of consciousness so please be patient)the cost of doctors, lawyers, accountants, repairmen, software consultants, nannies etc are not affected by the deflation from abroad..at least not yet..those rates have increased...
(even with computers..they have gone done but for instance a friend just bought a system for 3900 dollars..more former computer owners are not buying the 1000 pcs and below but are buying all the bells and whistles..also more bells and whistles are needed as the software packages are needing more and more resources..)
There are still a lot of layoffs occcuring as a result of mergers and the slowdown in Asia and the glut in certain areas of industry..
anyways..what I came up with what could cause deflation big time in the USA..is two
words "stock market"..when the market collapses..that would cause deflation..
and will create massive deflationary repercussions..many people are feeling wealthy with their gain in net worth from their unreaped market gains..if there was a massive correction in the nifty fifty..
the consumer obviously can cause a recession here..
then probably all would start focussing on US's massive debt and forgot about the "budget surplus" and all the baby boomers marching towards retirement...
comments? I definitely think that Greenspan is secretly hoping for more wage inflation..and Rubin is praying for Japanese recovery ..
If they can buy time until SE Asia to recover, all will be well?

ps just heard about all the European companies that are planning to go public..that definitely should redirect more money away from US
and into Europe..sounds as if blue chips are going to have a lot of
competition ..so I guess that would be "deflationary" if my prior argument has any merit..
(ps don't worry about trashing my thoughts..I am here to learn)
