Dell Rises to Record Amid Optimism About PC Demand

Round Rock, Texas, Aug. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Dell Computer Corp. shares rose 4.1 percent to a record amid optimism that personal computer demand is improving and that Dell will gain further market share from its rivals.

The world's No. 3 PC maker rose 4 7/8 to 124 in trading of 19.5 million, making it the most active stock in U.S. markets. Earlier, shares touched 124 1/8.

Dell is poised to benefit from increasing demand for PCs in the back-to-school and holiday sales seasons because of its direct-sales model. Because the Round Rock, Texas-based company builds PCs only when customers order them, it avoids an inventory buildup of older models and can introduce newer, faster machines more quickly than competitors.

''It is one of the best-managed companies I've ever seen,'' said Lisa Rapuano, a portfolio manager at Legg Mason Inc., which owns 4.8 million shares of Dell. ''If (corporate) earnings are slowing down, companies that are growing are going to be more highly valued.'' boy this makes mad, 4.8 million shares, that's a bit more then me <ggg>

Other technology companies also rose. No. 1 PC maker Compaq Computer Corp. rose 3/8 to 35 15/16. Intel Corp., the world's largest maker of computer chips, rose 15/16 to 85 9/16, while Microsoft Corp., the No. 1 software maker, rose 2 3/4 to 113 1/8.
