****AT&T Voice Chat Now On Lycos - For A Price

BASKING RIDGE, NEW JERSEY, U.S.A., 1998 AUG 25 (NB) -- By Bob Woods, Newsbytes. Chatting used to entail a person using their own voice, but the Internet and online services like America Online changed that notion with text-based chat. Now, AT&T [NYSE:T] is bringing vocal cords into chat again, through the Lycos [NASDAQ:LCOS] Web portal site.
But unlike free of cost real-world conversations - unless the person at the other end is billing time, like a lawyer or consultant - AT&T's "Chat 'N Talk" is a fee-based service.
Two to seven people can participate in chats on the Lycos site via Chat 'N Talk, Lycos officials said.
A user can initiate an AT&T Chat 'N Talk session in Lycos Chat by highlighting and clicking on a name, officials said. The participant on the other end is then asked if he or she wants to accept a voice-chat. If the inquiry is accepted, the participant will be asked to enter in their phone number. All participants' phone numbers are kept confidential to retain complete confidentiality, officials said.
After entering the number, the participant's phone will ring, and the initiator of the AT&T Chat 'N Talk session, who has already gone through a similar process, will be on the line. The chat's "host" can then repeat the process with five other people for a total of seven chat participants, including the host.
All chatters must be in the continental US, including Alaska and Hawaii, AT&T said.
AT&T Chat 'N Talk has a set-up fee of $0.50 per participant and a charge of $0.25 cents per minute per participant anywhere in the US.
But a user invited to chat by a host doesn't have to worry about shelling out $0.25 a minute to talk in a conversation started by someone else -- AT&T said all charges are payable by the conference host.
System requirements to use Chat N' Talk are a 486-based or higher PC running Windows 95 or above with at least 16 megabytes of memory; Internet Explorer 3.02 or above or Netscape Navigator 3.0 or above; and one phone line separate from an Internet connection. A Macintosh version is currently not available.
In an effort to attract companies developing online games, shopping products and other applications, AT&T said it will open up Chat 'N Talk's application programming interfaces (APIs) for licensing, along with providing software kits to create new communications applications.
The enhancements to AT&T Chat 'N Talk on Lycos have been made possible through a collaboration between AT&T and enterprise-class interaction software and services provider eShare Technologies.
Lycos' Web site is at lycos.com .
AT&T's main Web site is at att.com , while a special Chat 'N Talk site is located at chatntalk.com .
