a bit of hope -- excerpt from today's wsj re: durable goods
=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Orders for durable goods surged last month in the U.S., defying predictions that economic woes overseas and the lingering effects of the General Motors Corp. strikes would restrain growth.

Orders rose 2.4% in July, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday, after rising a revised 0.2% in June. The department earlier had estimated that orders for durable goods -- big-ticket items expected to last three or more years -- fell 0.2% in June.

July's surge, the biggest gain in eight months, was led by orders for semiconductors, stereos and other electrical equipment, which grew a stunning 12% after gaining 3.7% in June.

It would appear that the Christmas orders are starting to roll in.

IF we can make it past the coming month of earnings warnings and
VLSI doesn't warn, I think we'll be back to some kind of reasonable
trading range.

I'm trying to sound calm.., how'd I do?
