Steven, I agree that Russia in a depression mode is a dangerous situation. In retrospect I think that Reagan's tactic of destroying Russian communism at any cost will be seen as a huge blunder. It has destabilized the region, and now we will have to deal with problems in separate unstable countries, rather than one large checkmate. It would have been far better to use trade and other means to slowly change the system, as we are doing in China and Viet Nam. It may now be too late in Russia because we destroyed their economy with the arms race.

That's nice to hear. Being in the area you have a better take on China than most of us.

I have a friend in Vancouver who travels to China every year and he says they are becoming more and more Western every trip. He also mentioned the Chinese are more into cell phones than even Americans. Everybody everywhere talking on the phone.
