George,

<<He also told me the "market has spoken" in terms of FC rather than GE in the SAN. His rebuttal covers that pretty well. FC is 4 and 0 with support from the major disk vendors.>>

This is really the key point. ALL the major disk drive vendors are using Fibre Channel. NONE are using Ethernet. That's a pretty tough obstacle to overcome for the Ethernet guys. Sure, they can take a bunch of SCSI or Fibre Channel storage devices and put an Ethernet interface on it, but that doesn't provide the advantages of a pure Fibre Channel SAN.

I agree 100% with the need for FC vendors to be more proactive. Unfortunately, after Brenda Christensen left Brocade, there hasn't been quite as much press.

There also continues to be confusion regarding where Fibre Channel fits into the grand scheme of things. Fibre Channel is a natural in the SAN, where Gigabit Ethernet isn't. FC can also compete in the LAN, although GE clearly has the momentum.

As your post points out, without some sort of independent, head to head testing between FC and GE, there aren't any hard numbers to go by.
