Man Accused of Running Beanie
Babies Scam Pleads Guilty to Theft

AP
26-AUG-98

-- An Ohio man has pleaded guilty to theft and welfare fraud for operating what
police say was a nationwide Beanie Baby scam.

Authorities say Eldred Proctor and his wife bilked people out of at least
80-thousand-dollars by advertising to sell valuable rare Beanie Babies.

Proctor took the orders but never sent the dolls. The orders included one for
more than five-thousand dollars from a Nebraska man and just under a thousand
dollars from a Florida resident.

Proctor said he had cancer and needed money for medical treatments.

Proctor and his wife, Arlene, are also accused of hiding assets while collecting
thousands of dollars in welfare money and food stamps.

Proctor faces up to two and a half years in prison. His wife faces up to a
year-and-a-half in prison.

(Authorities say there were about 90 victims of the Beanie Baby scam in 19
states. The states are Minnesota, West Virginia, Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Nebraska,
Florida, California, Virginia, Connecticut, New York, Montana, New Jersey,
Oklahoma, Washington, Michigan, Georgia, Missouri and Massachusetts.)
