Gary --

I'm writing to Alan right now, telling him the questions I'd have asked "had I had the courage."

1) What percentage of TDM customers are upgrading to ATM and is anyone attempting to lure them away?

2) Will the completion of the proposed SBC merger with Ameritech have an impact on the contract announced today? Statistics show the combined company will control close to 1/3 of all U.S. lines. Can I assume this is their potential market?

3) Regarding your alliances with 3Com and Efficient Networks in the ADSL/SDSL space, when will revenues be realized and what growth rates do you anticipate over the next 2 or 3 years?

4) By aggressively boosting R&D to bump the 170 to gigabit speeds, are you suggesting the 190 might not always be in NN's stable? If so, does this indicate the trainer's position is also in jeopardy?

5) Popular sentiment suggests Lucent will make a play for Ascend after October 1 and the combined company will become a formidable competitor. What moves have you made or will you make to strengthen your position against such a behemoth?

Not all would have been appropriate for the public forum, but they're ones that need answers at some point.

For example, until LMDS vendors have deployment contracts, the business is still drawingboard status. Yes, they're shipping, but it's untried and I certainly wouldn't want the company to base its reputation on it this early in the game.

The SBC news is fantastic. There's no way anyone can prick holes in it. It's a foot-hold in the US carrier market and a major milestone.

I'll post some of these same thoughts on the thread.
