I was not aware that eBay collects a $10 seller registration fee up front. When I first started using eBay last September, they allowed me to run auctions up to the point where my account had accrued $10 in eBay commissions. I was then not allowed to run any new auctions until I had paid for the $10. I always wondered how many dollars they were forgoing. If they are collecting the fee up front now, that is much better in my opinion. I have been surprised at eBay's small profits so far, especially considering that they had around $9M in sales last quarter, but showed only about $300K in profits, which was about the same number as a year ago on much lower sales. I can't imagine they are spending all that extra money on advertising. In fact, I don't recall ever having seen an eBay ad.
