I was exchanging e-mail with a relative in the US on the subject of kids and schools. This is clipped from one of her mails:

The schools are also plagued with children suffering from "attention deficit disorder" - a kind of umbrella term for everything from "dyslexia" [itself a pretty broadly used term] to "hyperkinetic behavior" to just plain lack of self-discipline [this last is
never mentioned as it might imply a degree of volitional control or old fashioned will power which current educational ideology refuses to acknowledge]. The society at large is inundated with incentives for immediate self-gratification that undercut the older ideals of social responsibility, not to mention the hopelessly antiquated virtue of
patience.

I'm wondering if anyone here can confirm or comment.
