Maybe this is one reason...
Although it may not seem important, some folks like to buy stocks in 100 share increments. This used to be more important when broker commissions added extra charges for "odd lot size trades". With fixed price trades and deep discount web trading, this is all gone the way of dial phones and black-and-white TV. Owning even 10 shares of DELL can pay off very quickly even when one pays full service brokerage fees. For example, my youngest son (almost 4 months) got 10 shares at $92 from his Grandma. Wonder what they will be worth when he goes to college.
