No, the cert contains the number of shares. You can have a 100,000 shares stock certificate. It costs $12.

It's been a while since I had certificates, but from what I remember is that the certificate states how many shares you own. So, regardless of how shares you have, you get one certificate.

Now, you may get several certificates sometimes when you purchase stock over different days and make requests for certificates as you purchase the shares.
