Craig,

My impression of the difference between a channel protocol and a network protocol is that there is no contention for media access in a channel protocol. Is my understanding correct?

One of the liabilities of ethernet is that it is non-deterministic, unlike say 802.4. For this reason ethernet has never been considered reliable enough for process control (petroleum refineries, etc.) However, it is now being proposed in conjunction with a switched ethernet network. I've been led to believe that switched ethernet allows deterministic media access.

I have not read the article in NWFusion that you and George have been discussing, but it seems to a casual observer (me) that with ethernet spreading like kudzu or killer bees into new areas that GE could take over the SAN in short order. How is a SAN with a GE switch inferior to a SAN with an FC switch?
