Gary - The funny part is that it took several years for me to realize what had happened. I was heads down, jamming out the work, and one day it occurred to me that the monthly value of my option vesting was about twice my yearly salary... Several of my friends sold some of those options early on to buy a motorcycle or a boat - turned out to be pretty expensive toys when all was said and done. And technology work is addicting in its own right, so a lot of us kept at it full speed long after there was any financial reason to do so.
