Having certs in your brokerage (Street Name) means:

1) the TA does not have you as a registered owner, only the brokerage

2) the voting information has to be sent to brokerage, then distributed to you - a lengthy and somewhat not so reliable process

3) Your shares are available to brokerage to short / margin

Because we want the MMs to cover their short positions. If you ask for your certificates the MMs will have to deliver them and if they don't own them (because they short sold them to you) then they have to buy them on the open market and the price will go up.
