Thanks to Maya.........dailynews.yahoo.com Pioneer Forges Billing Services Alliance By Karen J. Bannan, ZDNet In the future, cable customers may not have to wait for their bills to come in the mail if Japanese consumer electronics manufacturer Pioneer Electronic Corp. succeeds in its quest. This week, the company formed a worldwide strategic alliance with French cable operator Canal+, silicon video manufacturer C-Cube Microsystems Inc. and DiviCom Inc., a compression system developer, to produce an end-to-end digital system that will allow multiple system operators to set up billing services, interactive guides and other interactive video services. Under the alliance, Canal+ is expected to adapt its Mediahighway middleware and C-Cube's advanced set-top technology for use in the North American market. The new system will be marketed by Pioneer New Media Technologies Inc., Pioneer's U.S. sales arm, officials said. The new and currently unnamed system will be compatible with the OpenCable standard, which is still under development at Cable Television Laboratories Inc. (CableLabs). It will include a headend and set-top box that can support e-commerce, home banking, network gaming, video-on-demand and Web browsing, officials said. The announcement was well received by industry leaders. "This alliance represents a strong consortium of technology leaders with significant years of combined experience in implementing digital video solutions," said Laurie Schwartz, CableLabs' director of advanced platforms and services and OpenCable's project leader. "Their support of the OpenCable process and their willingness to contribute their expertise is a great benefit to the OpenCable effort." The system is expected to be available in 1999.
