Armstrong may not insert all the variables as you suggest. Nor may he be able to rationalize why the cycles occur. The point is that by observing certain events over considerable time periods, now most-likely aided by computer analysis, certain events occur on a predictable cyclical time pattern rather than randomly. A large field of research has been directed to this by others - and not just in the financial arena.

When such cycles were first observed many years ago, it was attributed to certain weather patterns which affected crops, and thus inflation, recession etc. But there have also been cycles found in regard to war and other such events which may defy rationale explanation.
