"...Ol' Bill could have a much tougher time trying to control hardware/software integration if his net worth drops from billions -- to a pack of Marlboro Lights ;)"

Ian,

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for that to happen.

Anyway, I'm not sure if breaking up Microsoft is a good or bad thing for Apple. Certainly the status quo has been pretty good since Microsoft has had to help keep Apple viable as nominal "competition." Fortunately, Steve Jobs has taken the opportunity to get the company off life support.

If Microsoft is broken up, federal courts will have to ensure that the OS guys are separated by a brick wall from the applications guys. It's fun to speculate on just how this will happen. (It's fun to watch Microsoft squirm too) Of course, we're going to have to wait a while to see how it all ends.

Bob

P.S. Speaking of Jobs and Gates, there's a movie coming about the"Pirates of Silicon Valley" (working title): dailynews.yahoo.com.

P.P.S. Nice "Computerworld" OP/ED piece about Steve Jobs: computerworld.com.

Remember, Slick Willy Gates has taken profit on many shares of his empire.

Let MSFT go out of business and he'll still have some cash to spare.

He'll also have the financial backing of banks and venture capital looking for some other developments.
