You ask:
why you believe Oracle is taking market share from Informix, since it already dominates the database market? Is Oracle aiming at Informix
customers?

I believe you answered your own question. Oracle not only dominates the database market it has an excellent marketing and sales organization which with the backing of company's financial strength can make all sorts of deals in order to steal a new account from compettitors such as IFMX and SYBS. Informix may have a better technology in some areas but what is the use if it can not market and sell it. In todays uncertain world economic situation corporations rather be with established big players that they can count on for their support. And regretfully Informix is not in such a position. Please read the following news from Oracle that just came out and ask yourself how many other US high tech firms you know of (with the exception of DELL) who can come up and claim that South East Asia has had no impact on their business? biz.yahoo.com

Oracle no longer considers Informix and Sybase as its compettiors. However, Oracle will be facing a huge challenge (to say the least) from Microsoft's SQL server due out later on this year as well as IBM. In the new database world order, in my opinion of course, there will be only 3 dominant players: Oracle, IBM and Microsoft. Sybase and Informix are pretty much washed out and are things of the past (sort of like Novel and Borland).
