Michelle - the technology is moving so fast that it's hard to get up-to-the-second stuff into print, but you'll find several relatively basic books about "networking" at Amazon.com.

To answer your questions more directly, essentially a router "routes" data from one link of a network to another (not everyone can share the same pairs of wires!). Some of the very basic units are pretty much "shake and bake" out of the box, with a few console/setup commands through the maintenance port. Others are more modular, have different kinds of ports for different applications and require fairly sophisticated skill and knowledge to set up appropriately.

In short, it isn't going to be easy to do a supply chain management analysis - by the time someone does it on a relatively stable product, another product will be moving into the chain!

Mr. K. (Hey, I know it sounds arrogant, but Bullwinkle was already taken!!)
