Major players monopolize China's VCD market

After over a year of continuous price and advertising wars, Shinco, Idall, Malata and Amoisonic brand VCD players monopolize 70.44 percent of China's market share. The top ten brands account for up to 88.61 percent market share, according to May 1998's sales statistics, from the National Statistics Bureau.

Domestic China brands have gained a 93 percent share of the market. In addition to the progress these makers have made in technical ability and enhanced after-sales service, their ability to price competitively is vital to the successful sales. Compared to last May, the average price of a VCD player dropped by 14 percent - a VCD player can be found on the market for $100.
