El: Every little bit helps ! A couple of years back, before I bought a COMPAQ DESKPRO and got onto the internet, I used to make good money on the market relying on a midday perusal of the previous days prices in the Herald Tribune, and the occasional toll-free call to Schwab from wherever I was in the world and perhaps a faxed research report or two. In retrospect, it all seems so simple, innocent and enjoyable. With this dreaded internet, however, it has become onerous and fretful. Constant torrents of information and misinformation, trivia and substance, fact and opinion in one stream of collective consciousness punctuated by screams of pain and yelps of pleasure. If one is not careful one's day to day judgement can be seriously affected. Lately, I have tried to recapture those halcyon internet-free days. Had I been relying only on the next day's HT recently, I would have noted with little stress that since bottoming a month or so ago, CPQ has moved up gracefully from $24 to $34 with an intervening spike to $39, just as I hoped it would. And I would have saved myself all the torture that exhibits itself on boards like this. I expect CPQ's share price to double at least in the next twelve months without overstretching its valuation because I believe earnings are going to be substantially better than is contained in current broker's predictions, and I believe that the momentum being generated by this "supertanker", to borrow Abbey Cohen phrase, will give it forward momentum for a couple of years, so that the market can keep on anticipating good things. My view is that I not only want to double my money in a year but I want to do it with maximum safety. Dell might double my money but not safely. Victor
