CANBERRA (Dow Jones)--The Australian government Thursday said it has approved the impotency drug Viagra for local sale.

Health Minister Michael Wooldridge announced the move after the drug was assessed and approved by the government's drug evaluation committee.

'They're happy for it to go ahead as soon as the company can change the packaging to have a warning that it shouldn't be used with nitrates, then it will be available through chemists on prescription,' possibly within weeks, Wooldridge told reporters.

Viagra is produced by U.S.-based Pfizer Inc. (PFE).

Australia/Viagra -2: Seen A 'Serious Medication'

Dow Jones News Service

Wooldridge said the government fast-tracked the approval process to ensure a blackmarket or internet market in the drug didn't develop.

He said Viagra addresses a problem that is 'quite common' in men over 40 years and 'much more common' in men over 70 years.

'It's not a recreational drug, it's serious medication,' he said. 'It should be used under medical supervision...it's not something you pop before a night out.'

The minister said Pfizer had developed the drug after many years and massive spending on research.

'I think it will be used more widely than even something like the introduction of penicillin,' he said.

'We certainly want Australian men to have access to Viagra and its performance-enhancing benefits, but we want to ensure that it is used wisely and that people with heart conditions are aware of the risks,' he said.
