AMAT tried to buy SMTL and was told SMTL was not interested in being aquired. We got there top technical guy who was put in charge of the Copper plating project. SMTL sued AMAT over the hiring and they redeployed him out of the plating group to avoid the conflict. Any plating tool developed while Bob was director of the project would be subject to litigation by SMTL. The legal eagles decided it was a losing proposition, I think management thought SMTL would knuckle under.

I agree with John L.'s take. I don't think SMTL is interested in being acquired. I'm sure they've had plenty of offers.
