08/27 Gulf News - Huge sales of Viagra expected

By Lamya Tawfik

Dubai - As Pfizer is getting ready to launch its impotency drug, 'Viagra', at the beginning of September, many pharmacies in Dubai are expecting big sales, while others are being more cautious.

An official from the American pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, said yesterday that they already have orders for 25,000 packs, each containing four pills.

"The packs are ready for distribution in the UAE," he said. Many pharmacies are already being bombarded by inquiries regarding the availability of the drug, even though it will only be sold on prescription. "We have been getting about 35 inquiries every day," said Dr Arif Rajer, a pharmacist at the Grand Pharmacy, adding that most of the inquiries were coming from GCC men, and not from nationals.

Most of them are between the ages of 30 and 50. "It has come to my attention that the drug is already available on the black market for Dh100, but pharmacies will sell it for Dh45." Many pharmacies are expecting a high demand for Viagra. The Modern Pharmacy had ordered 50 packs because it was sure to sell.

Dr Mohammad Raouf, a pharmacist at Al Shifaa Pharmacy, said that those who had the money would continue to buy the drug on the black market. While many pharmacies are confident of demand, others are cautious and have asked for small initial consignments.

Al Muteena Pharmacy's Dr Abu Baker Usman said that they had ordered six packs and were waiting to see the demand for Viagra. "There was a lot of fuss when Viagra first hit the news, but there were many cases of side effects and it's too early to make any assumptions about how well the drug will sell," he said.
