There is still a lot of uncertainty about how well CPQ will integrate DEC, and communication is further confused by the changing org structures. I am assuming that the fog will start to blow off in September, but then I said that last month... I do believe that the underlying progress is good but it may take a while for it to become apparent to the street.

Franz - As for the high end IBM machine, it looks like it will sell in the $2400 range, and will not be available till the middle of September. As with the CPQ machines that have already been out for some time, you will be able to get a digital connection flat panel with the machine for about another grand (different connection standard than CPQ's though). CPQ already has a similar 450mhz machine announced at a similar price point so we are well covered. In addition, I see no mention of built in ethernet or firewire (at least not yet) on the IBM machine, so it may not be as 'feature complete' as the high end Presario. Has a larger hard drive though, (16.8G vs CPQ's 12G), but at those sizes I don't think it matters very much. As for the Celeron, the only thing I can add to Rudedog's update is that the initial release of this chip was widely panned because it had no secondary cache at all and was therefore perceived as a 'dog'. The new Celeron A is much better in that regard because of the 128k cache that runs at clock speed. This is faster than the cache on the PII, which runs at half the speed of Celeron's cache, but there is 512k of it. Now that you are probably asleep, I'll stop!!!!

Regards,
John
