But the Bolsheviks weren't the revolutionaries that overthrew the Romanovs. That revolution was of the Mensheviks, the Social Democrats, and a variety of groups. The Bolsheviks were simply the faction that was ruthless enough to eliminate every one else after the revolution had occurred. No democracy desired in their mind.

The entire Patti thesis is based on guessing what Ho would or wouldn't have done, and I agree that this cannot be done. We can look at the behavior of communist parties which gained control to see if any behaved as Patti guesses Ho would have. None did. There was never anything stopping Ho from emulating the colonial revolutionaries who threw off the control of the British Empire in North America to create a free society. Nothing. Ho did what he chose to do, and emulated instead the revolutionaries who overthrew the Duma in post-Romanov Russia, creating a one party dictatorship. It was his choice.
