Geoff & Jay:

A slightly more conservative viewpoint from an older long term very successful investor.

You can sight DELL (which I owned and sold last month) and many many more success stocks, but there are just as many, if not more, failures. If you had put your $2000 in the market early this week you would have had a substantial loss in most stocks. Go slow, average in, and buy solid companies with good records

It's not quite as simple as picking a beatup company (BA) and expecting it to hit a home run. Yet, I like the prospects for BA and will be a buyer when MY indicators are satisfied, which because I am twice your age will be different from yours.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with mutual funds, especially for beginners. I own a substantial chunk in several balanced funds which include bonds, which are having a much better day than equities today.

And keep in mind all the free advice you will receive on line is about as valuable as what you pay for it! Good luck to you both and may your fortunes grow.
