More on TSMC, CUBE's foundry. There is an oversupply of foundry capacity, so Cube is probably able to negotiate very good prices for its chip manufacturing.

<<Overall however, equipment utilization at TSMC lingers at about 70
percent. "Capacity's not an issue at any technology level right now," Norris
said.

A lack of demand for foundry services has cut not only into utilization but
into sales as well. Monthly sales at TSMC have plummeted to $87 million in
July, from an April high of $130 million. This drop in sales correlates to the
drop in utilization and is not a result of any seasonal downturn. Last year,
TSMC's sales grew from April to July by 33 percent.

Other IC fabs in Taiwan have not seen a similar dramatic downturn in sales.
United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), TSMC's main competitor in the
foundry business, has seen only a 9 percent decrease in sales from May to
July this year. Macronix International Co. saw a 2 percent drop in sales
from May to July this year. Mosel Vitelic Inc. has seen a 0.6 percent rise in
sales revenue from May to July this year and Winbond Electronics Corp.
saw an 11 percent rise in revenue over the same period.

TSMC is looking for sales to improve this month and through the end of the
year. "August is looking to be better than July was," Tzeng said. "We think
September will be better still.">>
