Tom, you questions would be relevant to a private investor, but not for a publicly traded bank. They carried it on the books as an asset, showed "realized or unrealized gains on investments", etc. Suckers bot BK stock because their balance sheets and income statements looked better than the reality, and then paid a premium on imaginary "growth" - as it turned out.
