tippet, No intention to suggest you were a luddite nor did I intend to sound harsh. I really intended some good natured kidding. Please excuse my failure to make it apparent. <<TV gives us summary sound bites which convey precious little of the reality or more than the political agenda of the money behind the network.>> Do you remember a movie called "Being There" with Peter Sellers? He portrayed a man who had been taken in as a child by a wealthy and eccentric benefactor who isolated him to protect him from the world. Inside he tends his garden while his only source of outside information is the television. Then, as an adult, his benefactor died and he is evicted into the street. The resulting story is as rich a satire as I have seen. But back to your comments. I think you may be missing a point. You can turn off the offending network. You can choose whatever program you want or choose to not watch at all. Have you ever visited your library's video section? You can have Shakespeare, symphonys, Orson Welles reading poetry, virtually any subject you want. As for the PC I won't even start to tell you how I feel it has enriched my life. The list is too long. But suffice it to say that being here trading ideas with you seems quite remarkable to me. I can remember my family's first non-party telephone line.<<More generally, are we better equipped to really understand one another culturally with all the "communication" technology? >> I think we are. But the internet, indeed all technology, are only tools. It is all in the "how we use it". For my part, I prefer to have the choice. Best, Stitch
